Surrey Guard of Honour – Churt Juniors chosen

In September we took 20 children to represent the club and act as the Guard of Honour for Surrey CC at the Oval. The children loved seeing themselves on Sky Sports and enjoyed the whole experience of watching a 1st Class game.

Our Junior teams performed well in their leagues with the best finish coming from the Under 9 side, coached by Bruce Robertson, who reached the final (held in Churt) against Guildford. Sadly they finished second on the day but their performance augers well for the future of cricket in Churt.

We had 92 registered players in 2009 with 29 of those coming to us from within the administrative boundaries of the Parish. We forecast the numbers for 2010 will move over 100 with about 40 of these playing in the Under 11 age group. We will be fielding 2 league sides in the Under 11 age group in 2010 and 5 sides in the league at junior level in total.

Our new Under 15 side had their 1st year in the league finishing mid table and are now more experienced and even better prepared for next season.

We will start next season on Friday 23rd April 2010 at 6.00pm. We will have a new age group for the first 10 Friday evenings next season “Churt Minis”. This is for school year group 2 ie those born between 1st September 2002 and 31st August 2003. This will bring to the club some of the children currently attending the village primary school with which we intend to develop our community links.

We put forward 12 players in 2009 to be assessed by Surrey Development coaches in their age groups during late August and early September. We also had 7 players accepted to represent the Berkeley Sports Two Counties Youth League in different age group matches against West Surrey sides. We hosted one of these games at Under 9 level on 12th August and received thanks from the league for supporting in this way.

Jacqui Marshall has advised that 2010 will be her last season supporting the club as Welfare Officer. Our thanks go to Jacqui for her excellent support in this role and we know this will be a challenging volunteer position to fill. Any ideas for candidates would be welcome and Jacqui will aim to handover her responsibilities and assist the training of her successor in 2010.

Finally, a highlight of our year was seeing Rod Berkeley recognised for his outstanding contribution to coaching by Surrey Cricket at their annual awards ceremony. We look forward to Rod’s continued support next season to our coaching at the club and wish him well in his new home so close to the Club.

Lastly we must thank Ian Leek for his dedication to the ground and support in preparing pitches for the junior sides again this year. He does a great job and spends many hours ensuring we have pitches to be proud of.
Many thanks for reading this and for your anticipated support next season.
